Roland Petersen, a Danish-born American painter, printmaker, and professor, associated with the Bay Area Figurative Movement and UC Davis where he taught from 1956 - 1991. 

Born in Endelave, Denmark, Petersen received his B.A. and M.A. from UC Berkeley, where he studied under Chiura Obata, John Haley, and Glen Wessels. He continued his studies at the California School of Fine Arts (now known as the San Francisco Art Institute), the Hans Hofmann School of Fine Arts in Provincetown, the California College of Arts and Crafts, and Atelier 17 with Stanley Hayter.

He won a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1963 and a Fulbright Fellowship to France in 1970.

In 1959 he began work on his iconic and highly acclaimed picnic series. This subject has remained a significant inspiration to him even as his style evolved though the decades. His work is found in major museums thoughout the country, and has been featured in important solo and group exhibitions internationally.
