Selected by Director of Contemporary, Nancy Clare Caponi, this selection of photographs by "folk photographer," Joe Schwartz, documents the artist's experiences during the Depression.
Schwartz' use of photography to highlight the social inequalities of America during the 1930s resonated strongly with photograhers like Dorothea Lange, Margaret Bourke-White and Weegee and Alfred Einsenstadt. Together these photographers and other formed the Photo League to further promote racial and economic equality.
Sullivan Goss presents this exhibition as a special project to recognize the artist during the time of his exhibition at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art across the street.
