SANTA BARBARA, CA - Sullivan Goss is excited to announce a long-awaited solo exhibition by tonalist landscape painter SARAH VEDDER.
Represented by the gallery for over two decades, Vedder’s work has appeared regularly in group exhibitions, her paintings quietly resonant and unmistakably her own. Yet, State of Grace marks only the artist’s second solo presentation with Sullivan Goss, the first in more than two decades—and a rare opportunity to experience the full breadth of her practice.
The exhibition includes some treasures that have been tucked away in her studio waiting for their time to shine and others that are fresh off the easel. The paintings are timeless and peaceful. In her atmospheric images of California, it is almost as if each scene is viewed through the veil of memory. Together, they form a contemplative body of work: ethereal visions of the Golden State rendered with restraint, sensitivity, and emotional depth. Vedder’s work invites the viewer into a quiet pause, a fleeting but profound state of grace.
Originally trained as an abstract expressionist artist, Sarah eventually found her way into the landscape with Ray Strong and the OAK Group painters in Santa Barbara (she is now a member emeritus). Her paintings still reflect a solid understanding of various formalist concerns that would have been important to early modernist and abstract expressionist artists, while at the same time, her palette suggests contemporary tonalism and a deep knowledge of the diverse California landscape in every light.
