OPENING RECEPTION: 1st THURSDAY, JANUARY 2nd | FROM 5-8pm
Sullivan Goss Gallery is excited to announce its first photography exhibition in nearly 20 years. For this special occasion we have curated a show consisting of a diverse group of images from the collection of Peter Fetterman, one of LA’s most respected photography dealers. From Peter’s extensive inventory, we have selected a group of photographs that share a singular powerful quality - to inspire joy.
Peter’s recently published book The Power of Photography (2022) served as an inspiration for the show, and is a wonderful resource for both new and seasoned collectors of photography. During the COVID lockdown, with no way to bring collectors into his gallery, Peter ‘exhibited’ one photograph per day via his email list, usually accompanied by quotes from the artist and Peter’s personal anecdotes or explanations about why he found this particular image so compelling. The Power of Photography presents 120 outstanding images from the series (which now numbers more than 1500 entries and counting), along with Peter’s insightful words.
Some of the photographs capture serene moments of natural beauty, others the unbridled excitement of a roller coaster. Some of these photographs depict an icon from the world of music or fashion, or a playful young boy pretending to be an astronaut, but each image is a moment frozen in time, allowing us to witness the past firsthand. Do you want to see the expressions on the faces of Duke Ellington and Benny Goodman as they watched Ella Fitzgerald on stage in 1948? A photograph can put you there. Photographs have the power to preserve moments of magical serendipity that are truly sublime.

Sullivan Goss recently celebrated its 40th anniversary, marking a noble and highly notable life as an important West Coast gallery. From its reliable perch on Anapamu, launched by Patricia Sullivan Goss and her husband, Frank Goss — originally with a delightful café attached — and now run by owner Nathan Vonk, the gallery has become a staple cultural fixture and model of how to “gallery” (as a verb).
Although its staple artforms and stable of fine artists revolve around the classic arts of painting and sculpture, photography is having a showcase moment in the space, for the first time in nearly two decades. Fittingly, the exhibition on the power of photography is more of a friendly and broadly spun survey than a crisply focused affair.
THE COMPLEXITIES OF HUMAN EXISTENCE can fall away when a lens captures and embraces a moment, preserving it long enough for others to apprehend.
A series of such moments will be shared with visitors when Sullivan Goss, in collaboration with Peter Fetterman Gallery, opens The Power of Photography on 1st Thursday, January 2nd, in an exhibition that will continue through January 27th.
