OPENING RECEPTION: SATURDAY, OCTOBER 23, 2004, FROM 5 - 7PM

ARTIST’S TALK & SLIDE PRESENTATION: SATURDAY, OCTOBER 9, 11 AM

Sullivan Goss is proud to present an exhibition of sculpture by internationally renowned artist Betty Gold. To supplement the artist’s exhibition, Gold will offer a public slide show and lecture recounting her more than forty-year career. Gold has exhibited her work in the U.S., Asia, Africa, Latin America, and Europe.

She will discuss her frequent travels to Palma de Mallorco, Spain and her series entitled tiron, focused around the shape and movement of bullfighters. Tiron is Spanish for "to throw" and the dynamic folds of the steel in her pieces are intended to mimic a bullfighter’s cape. Gold has exhibited at the Exposium Galeria De Arte in Mexico as well as the Walker Hill Art Center in Korea. Her works reside in a number of international public and private collections including the Museo Nacional Centrol de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid, Spain.

The exhibition and lecture is timely as the artist prepares for a major retrospective in 2005 at the Casal Solleric monument in Palma de Mallorca, Spain. Her debut exhibition of steel sculptures at Sullivan Goss in Santa Barbara is entitled Acero meaning steel in Spanish. The new maquettes, each a conceptual study for a monumental yet-to-be created sculpture, was created over a three-year period and inspired by the artist’s travels to Spain. Elegantly angular yet constructed of hefty cut and welded acero, the series represents the maturation of Gold’s interest in complex geometry exploring motion, space and form.

I've been asked many times to explain my art, but I don't think that there is an explanation, as such. I can say, however, that I began with the human figure and ended up with geometry, which I love. - Betty Gold
