CHRIS WINFIELD - Artists - Sullivan Goss - An American Gallery, Santa Barbara's Finest Art Gallery

Untitled, 2021

36 x 36 | Acrylic on canvas

Chris Winfield had a childhood filled with creative activity, and was early influenced by his father Rodney Winfield, a prestigious stained glass artist, painter, and sculptor. As a youth he began working  as an apprentice to his father, grounding his work integrity into craftsmanship. He studied art at Washington University in Missouri, and became interested in exploring surface over content.

Winfield found himself influenced by Josef Albers and Hans Hofmann, and began creating flat plane paintings addressing geometric movement with manipulated color intensities. He also found strong influence in Asian art and specifically Tibetan thangkas. This opened the idea to his paintings not being literal but transcendent. Today within Winfields work geometric shapes provide the focus while color enables the major force. Together these elements create canvases of illusory landscape that toggle between perspective of foreground and background.
