To coincide with the release of the artist’s first ever monograph, RAY STRONG: American Artist, Sullivan Goss – An American Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of paintings by Ray Strong (1905–2006) the founder of the San Francisco Art Student’s League and Santa Barbara’s most influential artist. 1st THURSDAY, May 5th will be the long awaited book release party for the new book.
Last summer, the City of Santa Barbara joined together to celebrate Ray Strong with exhibitions hosted by the Santa Barbara County Arts Commission at both the County Administration Building and City Hall, the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History, the Santa Barbara Historical Museum, the Santa Barbara Trust for Historic Preservation, the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum, the Wildling Museum, and at The Easton Gallery, James Main Fine Art, and Sullivan Goss. Many of the paintings from those exhibitions were included in the publication, creating a fitting testament to an artist who was so beloved in Santa Barbara.
Not quite a year later, the book is available for sale for $50. Sullivan Goss will present a selection of paintings for sale to celebrate – some of which are featured in the new book.
Fittingly, the exhibition will close on July 3, 2016 – the ten year anniversary of Ray’s passing. Friends, collectors, and supporters are invited to an event to be held that Sunday at 2PM. Refreshments will be served. Equally fittingly, current and emeritus members of the OAK Group – the plein air painting group that is involved in environmental advocacy and which Ray “founded” with Arturo Tello and Erika Edwards – will be celebrating their 30 year anniversary with a one month exhibition at the gallery that will open a few days later. OAK Group artists will be bringing their paintings by that day, so the party will also serve as a preview for the OAK Group’s 30th Anniversary Show – to be curated by Arturo Tello.
